You wouldn't know it by the size of this category, but I'm a relatively new fan of Vig and the SSoV. When I got involved with the madhouse called DC2, I sat down with my DC Encyclopedia to pick out who’d be good to use in Weird Western Quarterly, and just for the heck of it, I read Greg Saunders’ entry. I knew about the guy before that, but only vaguely (my Vigilante experience was more with Adrian Chase, thanks to "the original stack"), so I had no idea just how many adventures he's had, and in so many eras (Golden Age, Old West, Modern DCU). Basically, he had limitless story potential. “Oh, I’ve gotta use this guy,” I decided, and onto the wish list he went. Since then, Greg's become my #2 fave cowboy, tied with Bat Lash (though Vig is beginning to take the lead!), plus he's just fun to write, no matter how young or old he is, so I'm more than happy to give him and his Soldier cohorts their own category.
And don't worry, the singing-cowboy fun doesn't stop here. Greg will be turning up soon in another project of mine. Watch this space for further developments!
A Lonely Soldier Away From Home: My first Vig work. I wrote it as a "sneak preview" for the larger project I was working on at the time...which is the next item on our list.
Seven Soldiers of Victory: Gone But Not Forgotten
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
This story was only possible because the original writer got too bogged down to work on it. I'd been helping him tweak some parts of his version of it (which was drastically different from my own version), so when he had to walk away, I gladly took up the reins. For those of you who are long-time SSoV fans, you'll find a lot of familiar elements, but with a DC2 twist. It's your typical "Golden Age heroes get lost in time just when the world needs them most and the modern heroes have to rescue them just before everything goes to Hell" story.
Posthumously: This was co-written with Brian Burchette, our Green Arrow fic writer at DC2. It's partly a nod back to the Golden Age SSoV (which pre-Crisis Green Arrow was a member of), and partly a belated tribute to Adrian Chase, who had died before Greg Saunders made his DC2 debut. If you like the story, I suggest that you check out the rest of Brian's work on the site, as he's one of the best writers we have cranking out fics.
Here We Are As In Olden Days: A Vigilante Christmas story, set during his time in the Old West. Kinda sentimental, kinda sappy, but I couldn't resist doing it.
Mending Fences: Just a quiet story between Greg and Max Mercury, a couple of old friends from the Old West who are still trying to figure out how to manage in modern times.
The Long Shot: More Old West Vig, with some links to the present. I wrote it originally for DC2's Weird Western Spectacular, a special put out by myself and a bunch of other writers. If you want a wide-ranging sample of what WWQ has to offer, this special is your best bet.
